Abstract

The electroless nickel plating on a conductive or insulating substrate is a widely used technique in various industries. The different deposition processes are relatively complex, and depend on several factors such as pH, temperature, composition of nickel baths and nature of the substrate. This review presents the effect of these parameters on the quality of the nickel deposit. Then, it focuses on the nickel electroless plating of plastics, and details the different stages of pre-treatment of this kind of material. During the different steps, toxic chemical products such as sulfochromic acid have always been used. To replace such products, environmentally friendly processes have been developed. Recent work on this topic as well as the effectiveness of the proposed methods are discussed at the end of this review.
